Vulcan D'Kyr Class - Coloration Part 3

Of course, the preliminary work from Coloration Part 2 cannot be the end result. For a realistic look of the aztec pattern of vulcan ships, a more metallic component was now missing.

I used this effect to get a speckle look.

So that the speckle effect doesn't look too intense and artificial, I diluted copper with Glaze Medium (Copper 77710 - 50% + Glaze Medium 50%). This makes the lower hull color shine through.

As a second effect, I added a little German C. Black Brown 70822 to the DARK RED mix from Coloration Part 2. This gives the Aztec pattern more depth.

The windows are painted with Pale Sand 70837.

For the grooves and all lines I used German C. Black Brown 70822.

Vulcan D'Kyr Class - Coloration Part 2

In order to realize the details on the vulcan D'Kyr, I took a closer look at the drex files CGI model.

I identified three different basic colors of platings:
DARK RED
  • Dark Red 70946 (30%)
  • Red Leather 70818 (20%)
  • Red Tail Light German (Panzer Aces) 307 (40%)
  • Glaze Medium (10%)
BROWN RED
  • Dark Red 70946 (30%)
  • Red Leather 70818 (40%)
  • Red Tail Light German (Panzer Aces) 307 (20%)
  • Glaze Medium (10%)
GREY RED
  • the DARK RED mix (30%)
  • + Neutral Grey 70992 (30%)
  • + Track Primer (Panzer Aces) 304 (30%)
I applied these basic colors to the corresponding areas using the orthos of the CGI model. Everything is hand painted. By adding Glaze Medium, the color on the model lies very smooth. This way you don't see the brush stroke.

In order to simulate an active Warp drive in the ring, I chose a light blue color combination:
  • Glossy Black 70861 (15%)
  • Silver 70997 (35%)
  • Field Blue 70964 (25%)
  • Blue 70925 (25%)
I painted the raised details in the Warp drive with the same color mix + more Silver.

For the powered down Warp drive of the DSRV (Vulcan Rescue Ship) I used the same color mix.

Vulcan D'Kyr Class - Coloration Part 1

To find a good solution for the basic color of the Vulcan D'Kyr was a bit difficult. I wanted a shimmering metallic look but no metallic color per se. I wanted no metal as base coat, but a color with metallic undertone.

My one is a mix of Vallejo Model Air:
  • Mahagony 71036 (30%)
  • Wood 71077 (60%)
  • Copper 77710 (10%)

The next step is to apply the red and copper details.

With model filler I have smoothed the strong indentations at the ring, as they are also smooth on the original ship.

Vulcan D'Kyr Class - The DSRV

John Eaves:  "...the rejected idea (of the Vulcan Rescue Ship) came from a football shape cut open like a sandal,...". (johneaves.wordpress.com - May 7, 2009) It's called DSRV (Deep Space Rescue Vehicle).

The DSRV is very accurate. I only added some lines on the down side of the upper section and I have sanded a lot of material from the small wings so that they fit more to the original.

Vulcan D'Kyr Class

The largest known Vulcan ship of the 22nd Century from Star Trek Enterprise. This ship design is one of my absolute favorites! I like the idea of the ring very much. Too bad that we have never seen in the series that the ring is raised and the ship then goes into Warp.

I bought the Vulcan D'Kyr Class resin kit in 1/1400. It is 43,6cm long and a realy accurate kit. In order to build it exactly I had only add a component of plastic on the top behind the bridge section.
