Vulcan D'Kyr Class - Coloration Part 3

Of course, the preliminary work from Coloration Part 2 cannot be the end result. For a realistic look of the aztec pattern of vulcan ships, a more metallic component was now missing.

I used this effect to get a speckle look.

So that the speckle effect doesn't look too intense and artificial, I diluted copper with Glaze Medium (Copper 77710 - 50% + Glaze Medium 50%). This makes the lower hull color shine through.

As a second effect, I added a little German C. Black Brown 70822 to the DARK RED mix from Coloration Part 2. This gives the Aztec pattern more depth.

The windows are painted with Pale Sand 70837.

For the grooves and all lines I used German C. Black Brown 70822.

Vulcan D'Kyr Class - Coloration Part 2

In order to realize the details on the vulcan D'Kyr, I took a closer look at the drex files CGI model.

I identified three different basic colors of platings:
DARK RED
  • Dark Red 70946 (30%)
  • Red Leather 70818 (20%)
  • Red Tail Light German (Panzer Aces) 307 (40%)
  • Glaze Medium (10%)
BROWN RED
  • Dark Red 70946 (30%)
  • Red Leather 70818 (40%)
  • Red Tail Light German (Panzer Aces) 307 (20%)
  • Glaze Medium (10%)
GREY RED
  • the DARK RED mix (30%)
  • + Neutral Grey 70992 (30%)
  • + Track Primer (Panzer Aces) 304 (30%)
I applied these basic colors to the corresponding areas using the orthos of the CGI model. Everything is hand painted. By adding Glaze Medium, the color on the model lies very smooth. This way you don't see the brush stroke.

In order to simulate an active Warp drive in the ring, I chose a light blue color combination:
  • Glossy Black 70861 (15%)
  • Silver 70997 (35%)
  • Field Blue 70964 (25%)
  • Blue 70925 (25%)
I painted the raised details in the Warp drive with the same color mix + more Silver.

For the powered down Warp drive of the DSRV (Vulcan Rescue Ship) I used the same color mix.

Klingon D-5 Class - Coloration

The Klingon D-5 Class has an light greenish gray base coat.

I used Vallejo Model Air Gunship Green 71014 (50%) + US Light Grey 71045 (50%).

For the armor plates I used a mix of Vallejo Model Color Gunship Green 70895 (70%) + Glaze Medium (30%).

In my next step I used a rough bristle brush to speckle the plating with Vallejo:
+ Gunship Green 70895 (33%)
+ US Dark Green 70893 (33%)
+ Pale Sand 70837 (33%)

Klingon D-5 Class

John Eaves created the Klingon D-5 class. It is an advanced design of the Klingon Tanker from ENT "Marauders".
design sketch of John Eaves

As seen in Star Trek Enterprise - this is the Klingon D-5 resin kit from Starcraft in 1/1400 which I bought. It's a perfect detailed kit with very small parts and 15,5cm in length.

My only change was to cut the mounts of the braces.

Vulcan D'Kyr Class - Coloration Part 1

To find a good solution for the basic color of the Vulcan D'Kyr was a bit difficult. I wanted a shimmering metallic look but no metallic color per se. I wanted no metal as base coat, but a color with metallic undertone.

My one is a mix of Vallejo Model Air:
  • Mahagony 71036 (30%)
  • Wood 71077 (60%)
  • Copper 77710 (10%)

The next step is to apply the red and copper details.

The size of the Andorian battle cruiser Kumari

I don't know why the Andorian Kumari is declared as a "small" ship (around 360m long) on so many websites. That was never seen in the TV-Series Star Trek Enterprise. Neither compared to the Enterprise NX-01 still to Vulcan D'Kyr Class the Kumari is small. On the contrary - the Kumari can keep up with the length of the D'Kyr Class which is more than 600m long.

If the Kumari would be 360m long, the ship would have a deck height of only 2,20m. To obtain a standard deck height of around 3m (2.5m + 0.5m for EPS cables, power cables, ...), the Kumari must be 420.8m long, which also coincides with the screenshots in the TV-Series.

Size of the SS Emmette

screenshot by trekcore.com (ENT opening credits)
This is the schematic of the SS Emmette:

schematic by DrexFiles
My premise: the SS Emmette has no windows. So it is a prototype to test higher warp speed. Therefore there will be no "luxury rooms" and a normal ceiling height of 2.5 m. The rest of the ship is full of technology.
The ship is 131m long. If the ship (like the model kit from Fantastic Plastic) would really be 95m long, then the deck would only have a high of 1.8 m.

Suliban Ships have a wood-colored tone. For this model I used Vallejo Model Air Mahagony 71036 (30%) Light Brown 71027 (60%).

On this color I gave a dark washing with:
+ Mahagony 71036 (10%)
+ Leather Brown 70871 (40%)
+ Glaze Medium (50%)

After drying, I applied a bright washing with Vallejo Panzer Aces 301 Light Rust.

In the last step I have given the model shades for more depth with Vallejo Cam. Black Brown 70822.
For the highlights I have dabbed gently Panzer Aces 303 Yellowish Rust. The window color is a mix of White and Pale Blue.

Vulcan D'Kyr Class - The Ring

With model filler I have smoothed the strong indentations at the ring, as they are also smooth on the original ship.

Suliban Long Cell Ship

I bought these resin Suliban Long Cell Ships in 1/1400. The master is a 3D-print. Very very small ships! They are only 2cm long.
They were seen in the Star Trek Enterprise episodes: "Broken Bow", "Shockwave, Part II" and "Future Tense".

Intrepid Type Starship - The Details

On the main body I added a stripe behind the bridge section and on the bottom side I added the missing shapes.

I have newly built the rear wings on the outside of the Warp nacelles.

Vulcan D'Kyr Class - The DSRV

John Eaves:  "...the rejected idea (of the Vulcan Rescue Ship) came from a football shape cut open like a sandal,...". (johneaves.wordpress.com - May 7, 2009) It's called DSRV (Deep Space Rescue Vehicle).
design scetch by John Eaves (johneaves.files.wordpress.com)
The DSRV is very accurate. I only added some lines on the down side of the upper section and I have sanded a lot of material from the small wings so that they fit more to the original.
