The size of the USS Clarke - Malachowski Class

The USS Clarke NCC-1661 was a Malachowski class Federation starship operated by Starfleet during the mid-23rd century. It was destroyed in a battle against a Klingon fleet at the Battle of the Binary Stars in 2256.

The ship was named after the US Air Force pilot Nicole Malachowski, the first female member of the famed Thunderbirds acrobatic flying team.
  • The premise for all my deck calculations: a deck is 2.5m + 0.5m for EPS cables, power cables, ... = 3m height for a deck.
  • My calculations follow a purely mathematical approach. I do not compare bridge modules or disk heights with each other. I always pull in decks based on the rows of windows and then calculate a physically plausible room height.

The ship has 11 decks.
After calculating the decks, this results in a length of 277.0m. The official size of the ship is correct.

STAR TREK Size Comparison Charts - The Delta Quadrant

Here is a chart with the Delta Quadrant ships seen in Star Trek Voyager.

Klingon Vor'cHa Class

The Vor'cHa class attack cruiser had its debut in Star Trek: The Next Generation's fourth season episode "Reunion" and got a new color scheme for Deep Space Nine.

The ship was designed by Rick Sternbach.

Recently I bought the Klingon Vor'cHa class plastic model kit in 1/1400. It's a very accurate kit - the whole ship is 34,5cm long when assembled.

Almost all surface details of the studio model are implemented on the miniature.

On st-bilder.de there is quite passable reference material from the studio model of the Vor'cHa class. Especially the pictures of the bottom were very helpful.

To detail the kit, it was necessary to add some small plastic strips. The kit itself is very fitting, so that it was not much plastic putty needed to fill in the gaps.

At the Warp nacelles I missed most of the details.

The back of the radiator block I have completely replaced because the parts were not accurate.

At the "neck" some plates were missing.

At the "head piece" I have detailed only the front elements.

The bottom was the most estensive building part. Here were some details that were not included in the production of the model kit. Presumably, because those were the parts that could be removed on the original studio model to get to the wiring.

The size of the USS Europa NCC-1648 - Nimitz Class

The USS Europa NCC-1648 was a 23rd century Federation Nimitz class starship operated by Starfleet under the command of Admiral Brett Anderson. In 2256, the Europa was one of the nearest Federation starships sent to rendezvous with the USS Shenzhou‎ following contact with an unidentified Klingon vessel during the Battle of the Binary Stars.

After calculating the decks, this results in a length of 522.7m.

The Starship Collection magazine specifies a length of 383.3m. This seems very small due to the many windows of the USS Europa (25 decks). Then the decks of the ship would only have a height of 2.2m (including 0,5m EPS cables,...). That would result in an efficient room height of only 1.7m.

With this small length, the shuttle bay would shrink as well.
